Personal identification: Is Mr. Smith really Mr. Smith?
The way in which a customer is being introduced with a financial advisor, notary, health institution or government employee has changed considerably in this period. This requires a different attitude from all parties, because it's not always possible to meet at physical locations. Advisers, lenders, insurers, doctors, etc. are therefore challenged to take a closer look at their customer identification and verification policies.
Current policy: copy identitydocument
The policies of many financial, health and government agencies are aimed at physically establishing that Mr. Smith is indeed Mr. Smith. This is done by asking for his identitydocument in front of the customer and making a hard copy of it. The verification and determination of the identity has been taking place for many years in the same way: often with a note 'seen & agreed', stating the initials and surname of the employee who performed the physical verification. Followed by his or her signature.
Which rules actually apply to identification?
Looking back to the legal standards. The Wwft and the Wft contain rules concerning the prevention of money laundering or (indirect) financing of terrorism. These rules are based on a risk-oriented approach: the more risk the customer relationship and your service provide, the greater your effort must be to verify who your customer is. For example, as a financial advisor, you largely monitor for the rest of the chain whether there is identity fraud. Within the chain from advice to product purchase, these rules also apply to the provider and other parties involved, such as a notary.
Full digital identification and verification

Mr. Smith receives a Secure ID Link and is requested to take photos of the identity document followed by, for example, an ID-Selfie by using his or her smartphone. Mr. Smith is simply guided through the process by means of an explanation and even a live chat option to contact the support team. By using auto-capture, the process is handled within a few minutes. During this process it is made known, among other things, whether the identity document is clearly visible or whether the lighting is sufficient. The customer is in control to accept the identification and sends the data at the end of the process.
More and more of the aforementioned institutions are helping people to quickly and easily become an online customer by using smart identification methods. The application is started via a smartphone, thereafter is the identitydocument or the NFC-chip scanned with the carema and optionally followed up by a selfie. The data is already filled in on the smartphone in the application form and the customer only needs to fill in the missing data. The application is then checked by verifying whether the person matches the data from the application.
